(I have posted this on the Synology Community as well, since presumably it will find a different audience there.)

I purchased two RLC-510WA Reolink cameras to use with Surveillance Station on my Synology DS-420J. I had no problem setting everything up and getting the cameras connected to Surveillance Station. The cameras have fantastic resolution.

BUT I am having a terrible time getting the cameras to pick up person motion, and not pick up every bird that flies by, no matter whether I set up the motion detection (on SS) to be controlled by the Reolink cameras or by Surveillance Station. For control by camera, I am logging into the camera URLs, and for control by SS, I am using the Windows client.

At first I had done the setup via ONVIF, but then changed it to Reolink (RLC-510WA) so that I could make use of the cameras' smart detection of persons and vehicles. I am hoping this is getting passed to SS. I have used detection zones (either on SS or on the cameras, depending on which ones was enabled in SS event detection) to remove areas of bird activity. I have tried setting detection to either a 2- or 3-second delay before recording motion. On SS, I had motion sensitivity set at 95/5, but it still did not detect a person walking around our property. On Reolink, I have tried many different sensitivites (from 44 to 15, and different day/night settings), but again, it did not detect a person unless they were within 20 feet and moving laterally across the camera field. Yet we are getting a gazillion false alarms (often can't even figure out what set it off).

Is this a limitation of the camera? They have an astounding resolution up to 50-100 feet. (We live in a rural area, but we are just trying to cover the 1/4 acre or so that is fenced, and we have three other existing cameras.)

On the Reolink interface, Surveillance is set to Record, FTP, or Push only if there is person or vehicle motion (but I don't know if any of these settings affect SS recording).

If I purchased SD cards and just used the Reolink app instead of SS for recording, would that make any difference?

Can anyone help? I love these cameras, but I am intensely frustrated. Thanks.
