Max POE and IP Cameras per 16-port NVR?

If I purchase a 16 channel POE NVR for my home cameras system and also want to attach a number of other POE cameras via a POE switch in my barn, what is the max number of cameras the 16 POE NVR can handle? Is it only 16 (the number of POE ports) or the 16+ some other number of additional IP cameras? Just want to know the max number of total cameras the POE NVR will handle knowing there is a hard port limitation of 16 in this unit.
