How to keep app minimized?

I'm running the app on an older Mac mini - all works fine when the app is minimized. However, the app occasionally 'maximizes' itself, which causes the fan on my mini to run constantly and the machine to get very hot.
Running version 8.8.5 and it is set to run at startup.
I have to go onto the mini and manually minimize the software at least twice a day.
Any solution? Why does the app keep 'reappearing' even though it is minimized?
