I have been frustrated for some time wondering, "Where is the d**n motion???" The camera made a recording, so the camera thought "something changed", but WHAT??? By random chance today, I saw a post that explained the VLC Media Player has an "advanced option" to detect motion. I use VLC all the time to look at recordings sent to my FTP server. Sure enough, that option puts a white rectangle around pixels that have changed from one frame to another.

I am not 100% happy with VLC because it seems to ignore the BIG motion changes, such as bright headlights moving across the B&W screen at night. My guess is that it is only the "edges" of objects that appear to "change" from one FRAME to another. The body of a possum, for example seems to be pretty much the same as it walks across the screen. It's the feet and tail that appear to "move".

Still, I am so excited to have stumbled across this feature of VLC that I wanted to share.
