Hi, I know Reolink POE camera can work with a POE switch. My question is my router is Virgin Media (about 2 years old); from doing some reading, it does not provide POE (is this correct?). The next option is to connect a POE switch to the VM router, and then connect the other end to the Reolink POE. Using a POE splitter that gives 12V output. Anyone tried this before? The new POE switch will do nothing else but provide power to the Reolink. However, there *is* the option of getting a router that gives POE so stop using VM router. But for me that's a slightly different question.

I have an E1 for about 6 months and am happy with it. I want a second camera for a different angle but there is no power socket around there. However it is near to where the current VM router is, and that wall socket is not far off. I have also, or would still consider solar panel Reolink model but I don't get direct sun at that spot - there *is* the option of running solar extension cable that goes down the door, up the wall, over some cupboards to the window which is about 4 metres away. It's probable workable, __but__ solar Reolink (or the app) does not provide FTP.

Both cameras will be indoor. This is domestic and I am not planning to spend more than, or too much more than, what I spent on the E1. There are no security issues in the house, I'd much rather I have it installed first before security issues really arise.

Confirmation about the POE switch will be welcome (or suggestions). Thank you!

      David

Virgin Media VM routers till HUB 5 don't support POE on their Ethernet port (most home BB routers eg Sagemcom, Thompson, etc don't support POE) and so you need to purchase a POE switch (if the camera is POE) or a POE injector if the camera doesn't support POE but have an Ethernet port (data) and power port. Ensure that the POE injector/switch can support both the 802.3at and 802.3af in active mode as Reolink have some models which support one mode and not the other. Moreover check that the power output of the POE injector/switch meets the power requirements of the camera.

Which E1 model you have purchased? I have the E1 OD and this doesn't support POE. Data and power are distinct and so here you need a POE injector. Note that the voltage is at 12V and it consumes around 1A at max load.....so you need 12W as the power output of the injector. Reolink have a range of camera models you can choose from. Ensure that you know well your requirements and try to find the model which suits you most.

Battery operated cams are flexible and useful where there is no power outlets in the vicinity. But they have their downfalls too. They cannot record continuously and lack the pre-recording (say 15s) before the camera is triggered. So if the object passes the FOV quickly then you might miss the object. And yes battery operated cams don't support FTP/S but can store the video on to the internal SD or the cloud. I still cannot understand why they can store it to the cloud and not to an FTP server. Anyhow it's their strategy and design.

I would buy a POE injector and hook it up to your router. Then connect the POE injector to your new POE camera.
