I've got eleven cameras connected to the PoE ports on the RLK16. I expected the PoE ports to just be an extension of the network, but it seems that Reolink creates there own network which then isolates the cameras. The firmware update console of the NVR is, well, not very feature rich. So I'm curious how you can update firmware on the cameras behind the RLK16? Anyone know what network the RLK creates by default for the cameras?

Hi there, you can upgrade the firmware for the cameras by downloading the firmware to a USB drive, and then plug the USB to the NVR, please refer to this article for more details: Upgrade Firmware via PoE NVR

The NVR system will assign an IP address to the cameras, if you wanna connect the cameras to the network and add to the NVR at the same time, you may connect the cameras to router/switch which under the same network(LAN) as the NVR, and then NVR will be able to scan all the cameras that in LAN.

That's great info, and I've read that article before. It seems that the only way to upgrade firmware on the cameras is through physical access to the NVR. Is there no remote upgrade option? I support a number of small non-profits (all remotely), I suggested this camera system to one moving into a new building. It is very important that I be able to upgrade these systems remotely, as most organizations I work with have very little IT knowledge. I suppose I could connect all the cameras to their PoE switches on their primary network, but that would make the NVR PoE ports a costly investment that is not used.

I'm in the same situation. My NVR is a headless unit (rack mounted), so it is not so easy to attach a keyboard and mouse. Updating the Firmware via the Web Console would be much more convenient. Also, I can't actually find the Model / Firmware Version of the Cameras via the Web Console, so it is also difficult to determine if a firmware update is actually required.

Sorry for the inconvenience, the NVR doesn't support a keyboard.
And, if the cameras are plugged to the NVR directly, then you have to check/update the camera's firmware via the monitor interface.
You may refer to this guideline: https://support.reolink.com/hc/en-us/articles/360005175034-How-to-Find-out-Camera-Firmware-Version-on-IP-Channel-page-via-Reolink-PoE-NVR
