I just updated the firmware on my NVR and the android app on my phone so I'm not sure which one broke this functionality but, when I enable/disable email alerts in the app it does not work. Here's what happens:
If I am logged into the NVR directly I can enable/disable email alerts and it works correctly. But if I use the android app I can turn off email alerts and it turns it off on the NVR as well. But if I turn it back on (enable) it shows enabled (on) on the android app but if I log in to the NVR it is still off (disabled).
I have tested and found that indeed it is off. It does not send alerts. But if I enable it directly from the NVR then it does work.

@reocam_448003255267488 Kindly report it to the support so that they will fix it. Can you perhaps go back to the previous Android version of the client and repeat the scenario?

New version (4.34.0.5) appears to fix this problem.
