I just wasted three hours of my life with this useless piece of work trying to re adjust the detection area and it crashes every single time not only resetting the area but also turns into Chinese and locks so not only it does not work anymore but I can't close it properly either, I have to go to task manager to be able to close the app and open it again to fail again and again!!!!!!

Can you please write a software that works?

There is a new version coming up. You can download at https://reolink.com/software-and-manual/ later today to try.

We are working on making our software better.

I now the viewing of recorded video is worthless. No fast forward. Impossible to get to a time period as the red and green cursor c**p jumps all around

A description of the environment might be useful. I, personally, do not have a DVR, so my Reolink cameras all have SD Cards. When I go into "Playback" mode, there are choices at the bottom of the screen for 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x which seems like "fast forward" to me. I do not see a red or green cursor, so maybe that is a function of the NVR?

Which version of client software is not able to set the detection area? (mac/pc). Is this on the camera or on the NVR?

I'm happy with the improvements they have made in the last two years to be honest.
Now it work ok for me.

All Reolink camera with Micro SD slot can fast forward on Reolink windows Client. Here is an article for yo reference: Playback/Download Recordings via Reolink Client (Windows).
If you meet other problems during operation, you can continue to leave the comment here or send an email to support@reolink.com for further assistance. Thanks.

Will the fast forward be coming to no SD card cameras at some stage?

Sorry for the inconvenience. The fast forward function is aimed at the camera that needed to playback videos via Reolink software. If the camera doesn't have Micro SD card slot, the recordings can't be saved, the fast forward function will become useless.
