Hi, just got my RLC-842A yesterday and found out the main stream does not support H.264. Can this be enabled in a future firmware update or is this a hardware limitation?

@reolink_484491879100624 Hello there, thank you for the feedback. RLC-842A is a 4K camera and it produces large video files in main stream. To save storage space, we have enabled H.265 compression code for main stream videos and H.264 for sub stream videos.
We don't plan to enable H.264 compression in main stream. If you want to use H.264 compression, you may stream the camera in sub-stream instead. Hope this clarifies. -
Unfortunately the sub-stream is limited to only one resolution: 640x360. Guess this just isn't the camera for me.

Reolink makes quality products, but software updates are few (and far between). Chances of something this fundamental being changed are slim to none.

I just found out that after reducing the resolution of the clear stream in my RLC-820A from 3840x2160 to 2560x1440 (with 6144 bps, may not be relevant), it started producing h264 videos. I tried reducing the video size to speed up converting the h265 videos to h264 with ffmpeg, just to realize it had nothing to do anymore at all.
@Reolink-Lorenz it would be really helpful if this were documented in the camera's settings page next to the stream resolution setting.Reply QuoteShare1- Share this Post

@roben
Yes, for the new version 8MP camera, if the resolution is higher than 8MP, the video format will switch to H.265. If it is less than 8MP, it will be H.264. -
si potrebbe fare la stessa cosa anche per la telecamera Reolink Duo 2?

@meteone_635033864044546 Right.

I still would like to have this requested feature. I notice support for H.265 is quite bad (e.g. in chrome browser, but also for example in frigate), so it would be beneficial to have an option in the camera config to choose between the two and have the user decide based on the needs. Another possibility that would also work for me would be the support for a RTMP (main) stream with better quality. My Reolink 842 only supports ext RTMP steam with max 896x512 resolution.
RLC-842A - H.264?
