Today, we’re here to introduce a key feature of the Reolink Altas PT and Altas PT Ultra: Pre-Motion Recording. This functionality ensures critical moments are captured before motion is detected, providing a more comprehensive view of events. Below is a guide to how it works and how to configure it.
What Is Pre-Motion Recording?
Reolink’s Pre-Motion Recording starts capturing footage 10 seconds before motion is detected, addressing potential delays in traditional motion-triggered recording. This ensures the full context of an event is recorded, even if environmental factors (e.g., PIR sensor limitations) delay detection.
Key Details:- Compatible with SD cards, FTP, and cloud storage (not available for email alerts).
- Balances battery life and storage efficiency by avoiding 24/7 recording.
Configuration Guide
Setup via the Reolink App:- Enable Pre-Recording Mode
- Open the Reolink App → Select your camera → Navigate to Settings → Camera Recording → Toggle Pre-Recording Mode on.
- Adjust Frame Rate
- Default: 5 FPS (optimized for battery efficiency).
- Optional: Increase to 10 FPS for smoother footage (note: raises power consumption by 40-50%).
- Battery Saver: Pre-recording automatically disables if the battery drops below 20% (adjustable threshold).
- Schedule Settings
- Select Schedule → Choose Always On for continuous use or Custom to specify active hours/days (e.g., disable pre-recording on weekends).
Use Cases for Pre-Recording
- Incomplete Event Capture: Resolves delays in motion detection, ensuring recordings start earlier.
- Extended Monitoring: Suitable for users needing continuous coverage without frequent battery replacements.
- Limited PIR Range: Compensates for shorter detection distances by capturing footage prior to trigger.
Notes for Argus PT Ultra Users
This model supports three frame rate modes:- Stream Mode (default for live viewing).
- Smart Battery Mode (adjusts based on battery level).
- Pre-Recording Mode (prioritized in low-frame-rate scenarios).
Note: During live viewing or triggered alerts, the frame rate defaults to Stream Mode.

@reolink-oskar I have the Argus PT Ultra and there is no pre-recording. It is runing fw 3492.
-
@reolink-oskar I have the Argus PT Ultra Motion-Tracking version with FW 3.0.0.4486_24122645 and there is no pre-recording option.
Out of curiosity, does it work the same as it does on the Altas?... the camera does not go into standby? -
@reolink-oskar
I do not have this either with my PT Ultra. Same FW has @Chopstix -
@chopstix what is the hw version? I think they announce this before launching the firmware. Mine is
BIPC_560MIX16M35SD938MP and I don't have tracking either. I do not think these have high capacity batteries.
They should include both hw and fw versions in their announcement. -
@joseph_1979 BIPC_NT2BNO28MPW4SD15V5 has the tracking but not sure on the battery,
-
@chopstix
mine is
BIPC_NT2BNO28MPW4SD15V5
it has tracking but not the feature shown above. -
@joseph_1979 sorry, it is the Altas seris, not availble to the Argus series yet
-
@chopstix So yours is dc powered. That's why it has tracking.
-
@reolink-oskar Uh mistake in the announcement. I thought so.
-
@joseph_1979 no, it is a battery/solar Argus PT Ultra with motion-tracking. Same one that @KimchiGUN has... we got them through the Reolink Trial program.
-
@chopstix I have the Argus PT Ultra with hw BIPC_560MIX16M35SD938MP and doesn't have the auto tracking feature.
-
@joseph_1979 I am guessing that mine is beta camera as it seems like only the Reolink Trial participants have them.
-
@chopstix Correct.
